We Deserve Something Pretty!
Holy Moly Batman! I've had a crazy few weeks. I'm changing jobs, but had committed to two more shoots for a casting demo that I thought I should see through. I flew in to Hollywood, FL on Monday morning and came back Wednesday around midnight - quick turnaround! Just enough time to do our shoot, not enough time to have much fun on the beach :(
Whenever I come home from a shoot, I'm always tempted to spend LOTS of money and buy myself lots of pretty things. Maybe it's because being away from home is never all that comfortable, or it's the long hours, eating out every meal, all of it, I think I deserve a little treat. Are you ever a victim of stress shopping? Or ever play the "I deserve this (and this and this and this and this)" game? Does buying something pretty really work to make you feel better? I think it definitely lifts my moods.
So this time when I came home, I hit up Sephora and Anthro for all things pretty:
I picked up these Fresh SugarBath Lychee Bath Cubes after reading about them on another blog (I'm sorry I can't remember which one it is!) Made of brown sugar, they're slightly sweet-scented and definitely luxurious. I dropped 3 of these little cubes into my tub Thursday night, and I stayed there for practically 40 minutes (woops!) and felt so great afterwards. My skin felt softer, and I was completely relaxed. Several sales associates at Sephora had never even seen these in their store before, and didn't know what they were, but I highly recommend you splurge on a bottle when you're stressed :) A quiet bath fixes everything. You should get these. Now.
Because Anthro is just next door on State Street, I had to hit up their sale section. Oh Anthro, how I've missed you in my efforts to spend less money. Sigh. It's good to be home :)
I scored what I though to be two awesome deals...
I had reservation about this blazer on the hanger, but I've been looking for a casual blazer with a little more give so I thought I'd give it a whirl. And I was pleasantly surprised! The white colorblocking stripes under the sleeves have a very slimming effect. The fit is great, the fabric is soft. This will be a great addition to my spring wardrobe. It's shown as not available online, but there were SEVERAL of them at the State Street store. If you're looking for a less corporate, more sassy blazer to add a little jazz to your workplace wardrobe, this blazer is a perfect fit. And it's on sale for $79. That's still a little bit of a splurge for me, but you can never have too many blazers.
I may or may not have also hit up a little extra 25% off sale at J.Crew Factory for some spring wear...more on that later.
Did I mention that 100% of this shopping occurred during a 2 1/2-hour lunch break? Double woops.
Have a GREAT week!

New Arrival: NARS Makeup Kit in Super Orgasm
I really don't need to buy any more makeup, but see I had this credit for Beyond the Rack that I wanted to use up, and, well....
To be honest, Beyond the Rack never really has anything that interests me, other than low cost, super comfy sheets and MAC makeup from time to time. I bought a pretty horrible pair of shoes from their site and had a $15-ish credit after the return. By the way, I pretty much hate Beyond the Rack's return policy. You end up losing about half of what you originally paid, as they charge you a stupid-high return shipping charge which is deducted from your credit. For this reason, I probably won't be buying anything from them in the near future.
But recently I bought this Yorokobi Super Orgasm Set including a small blush, lip gloss, and nail polish. I've been interested in trying out some "cult classics," and settled upon this sassy version of NARS Orgasm blush. Orgasm is credited as being the perfect blend of pink/peach, and Super Orgasm adds a little gold glitter to the mix.
The kit cost $31.99 on BTR, but originally costs $49.00.
To be honest, I probably should have just bought the full-size Orgasm blush, it will probably get more use than these three pieces.
The blush has a nice color, the glitter isn't too overwhelming, it's mostly pigment. I didn't feel like a 6th grader getting ready for a school dance, which is always my ultimate goal. High standards over here. So the blush is a keeper, but the compact they give you is really, really small.
The lip gloss is sheer. It goes on slightly light, mostly neutral that could be paired with anything. But how much do I actually wear lip gloss? I'll probably have it for years before it's used up.
Nail polish color is also fun, not overwhelming, but young with the gold glitter. However, the application brush is awkwardly small because it's a travel size, and I really hate taking off glitter nail polishes (it's always so much more work than a regular nail polish).
I don't think this kit was worth $31.99, let alone a $49 original price. But I had a credit I wanted to use up, so whatever. I'll use the blush, I'll use the nail polish, and the lip gloss will just sit in my lip bag until the end of time, probably.
I'd recommend you pass on this kit if you come across it. Just buy the original NARS Orgasm blush. At $28, it's less expensive than this whole little kit, anyways.

Bath, Brew, Read
Friday night boyfriend and I celebrated a friend's birthday, which made Saturday mornings relaxation time even more important, especially since I may or may not have needed to sober up to teach Body Pump in the afternoon, and this soak definitely delivered:
Bath: Green Tea Pacific Bath Salts / Epsom Salt
Because my legs were sore from getting back into my workouts, I mixed Epsom salt with a new bath salt I picked up from Trader Joe's. I've never seen bath salts at TJ's, but this Christmas they added a set to their shelves, a three-pack including Green Tea, Chamomile, and Lavendar- scented bath salts. I used the Green Tea Pacific Bath Salts to ease and relax my muscles. The scent is slightly herbal/floral, as well as clean and refreshing. The salts fortify the body with iron, while the green tea contributes antioxidants, energy, and focus.
These salts dissolved quickly under water, and leave no residue in your tub. My legs were relieved and soaking in the tub helped alleviate a my dehydration. The chamomile and lavender smell equally refreshing, FYI. Each jar is 10.5 oz, and the three-pack sells for $9.99, which is a super steal, in my opinion.
Brew: Water!
After a night of a little drinking, okay a lot of drinking, I make it a point to drink twice as much water as I normally do. Water is definitely my hangover go-to, and the best way to get rid of late-night residual debauchery.
Read: Body Pump #84
Our clubs released Body Pump #84 today, meaning this was the first time that our members heard the new music, learned the new moves, and challenged their muscles in a new way! We team teach our releases, meaning I taught my normal Body Pump class with one other instructor. I was responsible for memorizing the first five tracks, and after the surprisingly long week at work, I needed a major cram session this AM. The class was jam-packed with energetic members, and I couldn't have asked for a more hardworking crew.
Tomorrow I'll finish up one more Body Pump #84 re-launch, and hopefully have time to take one more moment of peace before the week starts. Fingers crossed I can plan in some me-time and maybe get back to reading 1Q84.

Skincare Review: Olay Regenerist Microdermabrasion and Peel System
My skin is crazy. I rarely break out, rarely have a pimple or bump, but my entire nose is a breeding ground for blackheads. Ew, I know, gross. Sorry. But it's just the truth.
I have tried everything under the sun (except for a facial, I've never actually had a facial) to get rid of them. Exfoliating, several brands of pore strips, masks that claim on extracting all of them. Nothing really works. I thought about getting professional microderabrasion or a peel of some sort, but figured I try a drugstore variety before investing in a procedure I knew nothing about.
I picked up the Olay Regenerist microdermabrasion and peel system at CVS for $28.00.
The package comes with a very fine, orange microdermabrasion scrub that smells a bit like oranges and a serum/moisturizer gel.
First, you cover your face with a decent amount of the microderm-crystals, rubbing it onto your skin in circular motions for about it minute. You want to use ample product and rub gently and often. After one minute, apply a thick layer of the activator serum over the crystals, covering your entire face, and rub in for another minute. The serum will start to foam as you rub it into your skin, apparently releasing moisturizers.
It's normal for skin to be a bit red and the serum to feel a little hot after use. It's recommended use is 2-3 times per week, but I felt that was too often. I used it once per week.
I'll be honest, this product didn't change my life. The crystals did a solid job of exfoliating my skin, my skin felt smooth after I washed it off, but it didn't get rid of my blackheads, as I've heard microdermabrasion should do. Nor did it even out the tone of my skin, which it claims to do. In fact, it made the red parts of my face redder.
Overall reaction: Meh, whatever. NBD. I'd give it a B.
If you want a deep exfoliation, this will do the job, but I didn't really see how this was much better than my typical exfoliator used daily. I probably won't be spending another $30 for a drug store microderabrasion kit.
Do you have any experiences with drugstore microdermabrasion? What were your results?

LUSH Reviews: Ice Hotel and Aromaco Deodorant
Ever since I discovered Lush a few years ago, I've been a frequent fanatic. The SA's at my local store on Armitage know me by name and could probably point out exactly what products I'm going to buy.
I'm really into trying out new products from Lush, and in my efforts to support the environment and the general philosophy that green, eco-friendly and natural products are best for your skin, Lush is a great fit. I'm so spoiled to have locations in Chicago close to my home AND work.
This Christmas, I made an effort to try out several of the Christmas-themed bath bombs and bubble bars. I bought my boyfriend the "BubbleBeard," but he has yet to try it out. I think he's putting it off so that he can pretend to have a big white mustache a little longer.
Here's what I have tried:
Ice Hotel Bubble Bar
The 3.5oz bubble bar sells for $6.95.
The Scent: It contains peppermint and lavendar, my two favorite scents! The peppermint flavor is extremely relaxing and soothing, one of those minty scents that feels like it could clear your sinuses, but it's not THAT strong.
When To Use: It's great after a hard workout. I used it to relax my muscles after teaching BodyPump. This would also be great to steam up and bathe in if you've got a mild cold.
The Perks: There is a small amount of white glitter on top of the bar, but it doesn't dirty your tub up, you hardly notice it after the bath. Even better, it produces fluffy white bubbles, so your tub won't be stained.
Sad News: Unfortunately, this bubble bar can be bought online only. If it were carried regularly in stores, I'd be sure to buy one every time I stop in Lush.
Overall: A+++
Aromaco Deodorant
3.5 oz costs $6.95
Ever since I learned that the metals contained in deodorant can, officially cause Alzheimer's Disease and cancer (sad face) I've been on the search for a natural deodorant that would be healthier for me to use. I tried Aromaco Deodorant from Lush, recommended by one of the SA's, and I'm torn.
The Pros: It works. I don't have smelly pits and I'm not sweating as much. It's not billed as an antiperspirant, but it does contain chamomile vinegar to tighten up the pores under your arms. The scent is faint. It smells like witch hazel, which is kind of like tea tree oil.
The Cons: The texture is extremely rough. It hurts to rub it onto my skin. I'm so used to using deodorant in an applicator that it is strange to just rub a bar on my armpit, anyway. It doesn't come in a container, so it just sits wrapped in the Lush paper on my dresser, and I'm not sure how sanitary that is. But the chunks are too large to fit in a Lush tin.
The hunk that I bought is going to last me a while, but after that, I don't think I'll buy it again. TJs has a natural deodorant that doesn't look like it will scrape up my skin, and I'm hoping to try that.
Overall: B- ; The product works, but it's not that comfortable to use.
Let me know if you have any suggestions for a natural deodorant, I'm still on the hunt!

Bath, Brew, Read
Me-time is very important. I constantly schedule myself to do something "productive" or "new," if I didn't take some "me" time, I think I'd spontaneously combust.
To alleviate some of the damage done by my recent Christmas shopping, I've picked up about 15 extra group fitness classes to teach over the next month. I'm going to be busy and sore, but it's definitely a necessity to make up the money difference.
This weekend, I taught my regular spinning class on Friday, picked up a Spinning class Saturday morning, plus my usual Saturday afternoon BodyPump class, and then picked up a Spinning class this Sunday morning.
This schedule (on my days off, mind you) means two things: TEA and BATH TIME!
Bath time seems to be the only time I can really take it easy. Probably because I'm sopping wet in a tub. I suppose I could run around the living room, kitchen, and bedroom like this, picking things up and putting things away, but would that really be appropriate?
Last night I popped "A Gold Star" Lush bubble bar into the tub.

Last night I popped "A Gold Star" Lush bubble bar into the tub.
This yellow and gold star sells for $7.95 and is only available online at Lush.com I usually pick up a few "online only" products when Lush offers a free shipping promotion.
The website says the scent is frankincense and sandalwood, it basically smells like lemon. The scent was nice, but not my favorite on from Lush, by far. I'm more of a floral/lavendar fan.
Golden glitter/confetti bursts out of the star as you crumble it, leaving your bathtub with a pretty golden glow. I'm not the biggest fan of Lush bath products containing glitter and confetti. They make for a pretty bath time, but when I have to spend 3 days cleaning up little starts from the side of my bathtub, I quickly lose any sense of calm that I had earlier.
On the plus side, the yellow color did not leave a yellow ring around my bath tub, like some Lush products are known to do.
Overall grade: B ; nice, but I probably won't buy it again.
I also brewed myself a cup of Adagio Candy Cane Tea.
This is my new tea obsession. I love Adagio teas, and this limited edition black tea brews full of flavor with actual bits of candy cane mixed in. Adagio Candy Cane Tea is by far the best candy cane/peppermint tea I've had. Because I'm a tea snob, I brewed it in my Breville tea maker at 212 degrees for 3 minutes.
Overall Grade: A+ ; LOVE IT!
What was I reading?
1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. I read "Norwegian Wood" last year by Murakami, and loved it, so I figured I'd pick up his newest book. It follows two stories, one about a male author hoping to re-write a story written by a dyslexic, enigmatic teenage girl, and the other about a female assassin who finds herself in an unusual time.
I'm loving this book so far. I really enjoy reading Murakami's books. Although he's a Japanese author writing about Japanese characters, I have no trouble relating to the people and situations he creates. His writing is poetic without being flowery, and provides a solid amount of mental stimulation - more than chic-lit fluff, not as incomprehensible as philosophy.
A good choice if you want something to think about.

Is it snowing? Nope.
An awkward conversation to have, dandruff is.
Everyone has a little bit of it, and we all go through serious attacks every once in a while.
I hate to admit, but lately I've had horrible bouts of the flakes, intermittently escalating to full blown traumatic experiences. And I feel like I've tried everything.
Failed Attempts
The Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse didn't work for me. It just left me feeling self-conscious of how I smelled.
I forked over a wad of cash for Aveda's Scalp Benefits Balancing Shampoo and Conditioner. It smells good, but was a total waste of money in my fight against the flakes. 8.5 fl oz. cost me $15.50 each, and spending $30+ on some conditioner and shampoo that didn't work makes me feel silly. Plus, the shampoo tangles your hair, I felt the need to glob on the conditioner. This gets a C- from me.
The standard Head and Shoulders is always hit or miss for me. If I use it excessively, it will eventually fix my dandruff. But this last time, I found myself in a blizzard and couldn't get out.
My Salvation
I resorted to a special scalp product, used it twice, and BOOM. Like Harry Potter apparating out of Alaska, my dandruff disappeared. The secret weapon: Lush Superbalm
I went into Lush intending to buy their Snake Oil scalp treatment bar, but was told it was being discontinued, and figured I'd just buy the Superbalm. It has a MUCH better smell than the Snake Oil bar.
This product contains coconut oil, chamomile blue oil, and even lavender to give it a nice scent. It curse dandruff with the help of a naturally derived salicylic acid. This felt soothing on my scalp.
You take a small amount of the product - but even if you use too much, you won't stay greasy - and rub it into your scalp. I recommend you take your time to part your hair several times and rub the balm into your scalp - avoid rubbing it on top of or into your hair, you really want it on the scalp. Leave it on for 20 minutes (though longer doesn't hurt), then wash it out in the shower.
It's been three weeks, and dandruff hasn't returned. This product really worked for me.
And since I prefer using all natural products, I'm really glad it's Lush. I don't think $19.95 is too expensive for a dandruff product that solves all of your problems.
Have any of you tried the new Superbalm? What are your thoughts? Any other recommendations (natural or not) to get rid of a torrential downpour of dandruff?

Bang Boom
So I did it....I got bangs.
I feel like Spock.
Bangs are one of those mistakes that every girl needs to make. Like getting so drunk you vomit in your friend's kitchen sink. Or wearing an outfit that should have just stayed in your imagination.
On a happier note, I picked up a new nail polish to brighten my mood. "Instant Hot" by Essie. I've been way into the lighter nails lately, soft pinks, off-whites. Perhaps it's a maturity/professionalism thing. I really like this color. It's basically white with a bit of sparkle in it.
What's the biggest fashion crime you're guilty of?
